Last week Leif, Dalen and I made a trip to Shortoff Mountain in the Linville Gorge. North Carolina can get hot in the summer. Shortoff is the southern most crag in the Linville Gorge and is also the lowest in elevation. The forecast for Morganton this day was a high of 92 and sunny. Leif being the most motivated of us 3 led us to the crag with the idea of climbing in the Tilted World. Shortoff is a real deal wall. With a long approach, a steep gulley to descend, and long and steep routes in a wilderness setting Shortoff is one of the most “real” places I have climbed.  The walls generally faces south/southwest the routes get a lot of sun, especially in the summer. The bigger routes were too hot to climb but the Tilted World faces mostly north, providing steep routes in the shade. There are three routes in the tilted world and we had a party of 3. This allowed us to each choose one route to onsight. The party of 3 also conveniently allowed one person to be free to take pictures which would not have happened otherwise.  In short, we each onsighted our route and had an awesome day at Shortoff.

    “Full Tilt Boogie”

Dalen cops a rest on “Full Tilt Boogie”

Leif on “Pinball Wizard”. This was the consensus best route of the day. Some easy climbing brings you to the base of a roof where the climbing gets really steep on hand swallowing jugs like you would not believe.

We each passed around a green shirt today to look better for the camera. By the end of the day the shirt was completely soaked in sweat. Leif is a brave man for putting it on for the 3rd route of the day.

Long story short, we only climbed 3 routes this day but each one had a completely different character and the Tilted World is some of the most unique rock climbing I have done.

Sounds like a great time.  I don’t know if I would have put the shirt on.  Shortoff is sweet and it is always a full days work to climb there.  You guys got to get on on Super Crack when the weather gets cooler.

Matt-  I didn’t add grades for a reason.  That is not what its about!  If you want grades you can consult your friendly NC climber’s atlas.

Dang, that’s really gorgeous! I wanna climb on that rock, looks super fun. Not sure I’d be brave enough for the sweaty green shirt, though. haha
